Mercer County Community College

Registration Procedure

Students who are 16 years of age and in their junior (11th grade) or senior (12th grade) year of high school (or homeschoolers who identify as such) can participate in Middlesex College's Jump Start program (considered dual enrollment).

  • create an account, pick 'Concurrent High School' as your Admit Type

  • login, select enrollment, and complete and submit the information

  • bring the pdf registration form in person to the registration office

For each subsequent semester, you will need to complete and submit the pdf registration form, however if you have the necessary pre-requisites, you may be able register online.

If you have questions or issues, contact Chris Freihaut, freihauc@mccc.edu.

Placement Testing

Once you are enrolled, if the class you wish to take requires skill in math, reading, or writing, the registration advisor will ask you to complete a placement assessment (see the section labeled "MCCC Placement Test").

Prior to COVID: Skill in math is assessed based on prior coursework and other factors. Reading and writing skills are assessed using the Accuplacer Tests, administered in the Testing Center. A student is allowed to take the Accuplacer ONLY 2 times (and the second time costs $25). If you do not pass the reading and/or writing Accuplacer tests, you will be required to take remedial classes at mccc before you can take some of the mccc regular college classes. BE SURE you have adequately prepared for taking the Accuplacer tests before you sign up to take them. We recommend that you talk to your PLC mentor to develop a study plan that will help you be more sure that you will pass. See practice tests for reading, writing, and writeplacer.

Placement for classes that involve math may use tests developed and administered by MCCC. Here are practice packets for a few of the "challenge" tests (to place out of the class):

The Office of Special Services

If you have a documented disability and have had accommodations (e.g., extra time for tests) in the past, you may be eligible for these accommodations at Mercer. Contact the Office of Special Services, in particular Arlene Stinson, stinsona@mccc.edu, 609-586-4800 x3525, to discuss your particular needs.

Financial Aid

Students who are dual-enrolled, both homeschooling high school and taking an mccc class, are not eligible for federal financial aid, and must pay the full tuition for each class taken. Once the high school course of studies is complete, a former homeschooler is eligible for federal financial aid. See this email from the Financial Aid Director at MCCC:

Subject: RE: Information about homeschoolers not needing state-endorsed high school diploma (GED)

Hi Savita, Joan and Chris,

I've researched the topic, and YES, students ARE eligible to receive federal student aid if they are homeschooled. We would just need the student to self-certify on the FAFSA and then we would typically ask for a copy of the transcript created by the parents to verify the courses completed. New Jersey does not require a separate certificate in these cases. They do not need a state endorsed diploma as Alison Snieckus emailed.

Thank you for your patience and please let me know if you need any financial aid help with any of our potential homeschooled students.
